**Short answer:** Both last for decades indoors. Stainless steel resists corrosion most strongly, while brass ages gracefully and can be polished or refinished. Choose by where the piece will live.

People often ask me which metal lasts longer, as if one must be the winner. The honest answer is that both are very long-lived, and they age in different ways. Understanding the difference helps you choose the one you will still love in twenty years. We make pieces in both, so here is how they compare.

## How stainless steel ages

Stainless steel is steel alloyed with chromium, which forms a thin invisible layer that resists rust. It barely changes over time, stays cool in tone and handles damp and heavy use well. It is hard, which makes it durable and also harder to shape by hand than brass. ## How brass ages

Brass is an alloy of copper and zinc. It is dense and not magnetic, and it takes a very wide range of finishes. Unless it is lacquered, it deepens in tone and develops a patina over time. It can be polished back to brightness, re-lacquered or refinished, so a tired surface is a chance to restore it, not a reason to replace it. See the [brass home decor collection](https://www.byaas.com/collections/brass-home-decor).

## Which lasts longer?

Indoors, both can last for decades. In a humid bathroom or a heavily used kitchen, stainless steel needs the least care. For a living room, dining table or mantel, brass offers warmth and a finish that can be renewed. If a surface does wear, brass is the easier of the two to refinish.

## Look, weight and cost

- Look: brass is warm and golden, stainless is cool and clean.

- Finishes: brass offers the widest range, while stainless is usually brushed or polished.

- Corrosion: stainless resists most strongly, brass develops a patina unless lacquered.

- Cost: both vary with grade and labor, and hand finishing adds time.

## Caring for both

Dust with a soft, dry cloth, clean with a slightly damp cloth and mild soap, and dry right away. Avoid abrasive cleaners. For bare brass, a dedicated brass polish once or twice a year restores brightness. ## Frequently Asked Questions

### Is brass or stainless steel more durable?

Both are very durable indoors. Stainless resists corrosion more strongly, and brass can be refinished.

### Does stainless steel rust?

It resists rust far better than ordinary steel, though it is not entirely immune in every condition.

### Does brass tarnish?

Bare brass naturally darkens and develops a patina. Lacquered brass tarnishes much more slowly.

### Which is better for a bathroom?

Stainless steel or lacquered brass, because both handle damp conditions well.
