**Short answer:** Metal finishes are applied in different ways: polishing and brushing change the surface mechanically, antiquing darkens it, lacquer seals it, chrome is electroplated and powder coat is baked on iron.

When someone says a piece has a brass finish or a black finish, they could mean several very different things. How a finish is applied decides how it wears, how it is cared for and how it ages. This is a short, plain-language tour of the processes behind the finishes you will see on our pieces.

## Mechanical finishes: polishing and brushing

These change the surface of the metal itself. Polishing buffs it through progressively finer compounds until it is bright and reflective. Brushing abrades it in one direction to leave a fine linear grain. Both are about texture, not coating, and both can be sealed afterwards. See our [brass finish guide](https://www.byaas.com/blogs/home-decor/burnished-polished-brushed-brass-finish-guide).

## Antiquing

An antique finish darkens the surface, then relieves the raised areas so the high points catch the light. It is especially good on textured and repoussé work, where depth is the point.

## Lacquer

A clear protective coating applied over the metal to slow tarnish. It can be applied over many brass finishes, and it changes how the piece is cared for. We explain the trade-offs in [lacquered vs unlacquered brass](https://www.byaas.com/blogs/home-decor/lacquered-vs-unlacquered-brass-how-each-ages).

## Patina

Patina is the natural change in tone that bare brass develops as it meets air and touch. It is not a coating and it is not damage: it is the metal responding to being lived with. A dedicated brass polish used once or twice a year will restore the original brightness if you prefer it.

## Chrome plating

Chrome is an electroplated finish, typically applied over a nickel layer, which gives the cool, mirror-like surface. It needs careful preparation of the metal underneath, because a plated surface shows every flaw below it. It pairs beautifully with brass for contrast; see [how to mix chrome and brass](https://www.byaas.com/blogs/home-decor/chrome-vs-brass-mixing-metal-finishes).

## Powder coat

On iron, a dry powder is applied electrostatically and then cured in an oven, producing an even, durable surface that is tougher than ordinary paint. Matte black and matte white are the usual choices. See the [Nastro Wave in matte black](https://www.byaas.com/products/nastro-wave-iron-double-taper-candle-holder-matte-black) and [matte white](https://www.byaas.com/products/nastro-wave-iron-double-taper-candle-holder-matte-white).

## What it means for care and cost

A high polish takes more labor than a brushed grain. Chrome needs a plating line, and powder coat adds curing time. Hand-applied antique finishes take skilled time on each piece. For care, dust with a soft, dry cloth and clean with a slightly damp cloth and mild soap, then dry right away. ## Frequently Asked Questions

### What is the difference between plating and powder coating?

Plating deposits a thin metal layer using electricity, as with chrome. Powder coating bakes a dry colored powder onto the surface, usually on iron.

### Is patina a defect?

No. It is the natural change in tone bare brass develops over time, and it can be polished away if you prefer.

### Which finish is the most durable?

Powder coat on iron and a lacquered brass finish are both durable for indoor use, and each can be touched up or refinished.
