Burnished, Polished and Brushed Brass: A Finish Guide

By Bhavini Khullar | Founder, Byaas | Adjunct Professor, Montclair State University

Short answer: Polished brass is mirror-bright and shows fingerprints, brushed brass has a soft satin grain that hides marks, burnished brass has a deeper mellow tone, and antique brass is darkened in the recesses so raised detail glows.

Ask ten people to picture brass and you will get ten different pictures: a bright gold doorknob, a soft satin handle, a dark museum candlestick. They are all brass. What changes is the finish, and the finish decides how a piece looks on day one and how it feels in your home twenty years later. Here is how I describe each one to customers.

Polished brass

Buffed through progressively finer compounds until the surface is bright and reflective. It gives a warm golden shine that reads as formal and luxurious. It also shows fingerprints and fine scratches more than any other finish, so it suits pieces that are admired more than handled. See the Slithering Snake polished brass holder.

Brushed brass

Abraded in one direction to leave a fine linear grain. The result is soft and satin, with less glare, and it hides fingerprints and light scratches well. That makes it practical for pieces you pick up often, and it suits modern, minimal rooms. See the Cascading Nine-Arm brushed brass candelabra.

Burnished brass

A deeper, richer tone with a mellow, slightly aged warmth from the first day. It works in both traditional and contemporary rooms, and it is one of the most loved finishes in our range because it looks right with almost any candle color. The Serpentine holder is an example.

Antique brass

The surface is darkened, then relieved on the high points so raised detail catches the light. It is made for textured and repoussé work, where depth is the point. See the Foliage Repoussé antique brass holders.

The finishes at a glance

  • Polished: brightest, most formal, shows marks.

  • Brushed: soft satin, hides marks, modern.

  • Burnished: deep and mellow, easy to live with.

  • Antique: dark recesses, glowing highlights, best for detailed pieces.

How to choose

Start with how the piece will be used. Something on a dining table that is lifted and moved often does well in brushed or burnished. A formal mantel piece suits polished. A detailed panel or vase suits antique. To see how much finish changes a single form, compare the burnished and polished Balancing Act holders. If you are developing a product line, our custom finishes guide goes further.

Lacquered or unlacquered

Any of these finishes can be sealed with a clear lacquer to slow tarnish, or left bare to develop a living patina. The choice changes how you care for the piece, so it is worth deciding deliberately. We cover it in lacquered vs unlacquered brass.

Caring for each finish

Dust with a soft, dry cloth and clean gently with mild soap and a slightly damp cloth, then dry right away. Our guide to cleaning brass candle holders has the full method.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which brass finish hides fingerprints best?

Brushed and antique finishes hide fingerprints and light scratches most easily. Polished brass shows them the most.

What is burnished brass?

Burnished brass has a deeper, mellower tone than polished brass, with a slightly aged warmth from the start.

Will my brass change color?

Brass naturally deepens in tone as it meets air and touch, unless it is sealed with lacquer. Many people love this patina.

Which finish is best for candle holders?

Burnished and brushed are the easiest to live with because they work with almost any candle color and hide everyday marks.

Lacquered vs Unlacquered Brass: How Each One Ages

Lacquered brass has a clear protective coat that slows tarnish and needs less care. Unlacquered brass develops a patina over time and can be polished back to brightness whenever you choose.
